Tales of Rejection: Misery

Misery

Misery stood there, completely exposed and vulnerable. Her jet black hair fell over one eye. She missed her long, light hair. She didn't feel as though she looked like herself, but she did it all for him without complaint because it was what he liked. He loved the lean, pale, dark-haired teens. He loved their ample chests and slender legs. He loved the idea of having all of them at once, so she had to work as hard as she could to be even close to enough. After all, she was in her twenties. She wasn't getting any younger, and her breasts weren't getting any bigger. She had to give anything she could if she wanted to be loved.

She stood before Apathy, yearning beyond all reason to catch just a glimmer of attraction. He was stretched out across the sofa watching TV. What had Misery ever seen in him? She couldn't remember because all she saw was a worthless ass. No, despite that, she remembered a time when she was happy and in love. She remembered what he was like before.

Apathy rolled on his side and squealed something about wanting a drink. Why did she put up with this abuse and neglect? Love is always love and always will be, forever. You can't ever rid yourself of it, no matter how hard you try. It is like an incurable disease. Even if the person you love changes entirely, if it is true love you'll do anything in hopes that his old self will return to you some day.

She would do anything for Apathy's old self to come back. She would do anything for something as simple as eye contact. "Please? I love you." She begged. She begged and pleaded the way no decent woman should ever have to. "A person can only give so much before they become nothing more than a shell. My love and dedication to making you happy has sucked all of the life right out of me. No matter what I do, I cannot fulfill your needs and make you happy." Her eyes filled with hot tears, but it would change nothing. He did not care and he never would. He just yawned and closed his eyes. In seconds, he was snoring so loud that even peaceful sleep could not come to rescue her from such pain. Each loud snort cut into her like a thousand daggers. How did this happen?

As devastation and defeat overtook her countenance, she began to weep uncontrollably. She thought back on the best and worst thing to ever happen to her. She though about Hero. He had given her the world and then taken it all from her once again. What a sick and twisted game to hand a person all they have ever wanted just to tear it away.

Hero did all he could for her. He vowed to protect and fix and care for her, but now he was dead. She didn't mean to kill him, but she would never be able to forgive herself. She made such a huge mistake in bringing him into her world of complicated problems. Hero promised to make it all better, and she hoped he could. He sang her to sleep and told her stories of happiness. He whispered about love and eternity in her eager ears when he held her close and convinced her everything would be okay. Hero was Misery's whole world, and she loved him more than life itself.

She should have known all along her life was far too much for her beloved Hero to save her from. Eventually, her sadness began to seep back in. She found herself becoming sadder and sadder every day. The waves of her depression crashed down on the both of them like a typhoon. Hero fought for survival for both of them until he was no more. Something finally snapped, and it was all over. The poison of betrayal ate his flesh and the weight of responsibility ground his bones to dust. Nothing was left of Misery's beloved Hero but the memory of his lips against hers.

Hero was not around to save her from Apathy now. She would have given her very last breath to hear him say I love you just one more time. She would give her last breath for Apathy to love her the way Hero did. Apathy was all she had now, all she ever would have. She would give and give for all of her life until she had nothing left, all for a man who couldn't give any less of a damn about her.

No, she could not take any more of Apathy's rejection. She had to end it so she could be free. She had to fix what Hero had failed to. She had to be her own savior.

Misery walked toward the door, but things couldn't be that easy. When she looked back at Apathy, she fell, waking him up. He asked what she was doing and where she thought she was going. He was just pretending to care. She couldn't let his charade keep her there because Apathy would only fake it for so long before giving up again.

Apathy rose from his nap and walked toward Misery. He didn't even see it coming. Misery wondered if he felt the first bullet. It wasn't very difficult to pull the trigger. The adrenaline did most of the work. When Apathy stopped coming toward her, she dropped the gun and continued to leave.

Before Misery walked out the door forever, she glanced back into the house that had become her prison. She had to stifle a scream of shock as Apathy mustered up all of his strength to follow her. He walked toward her slowly and with sorrow in his eyes. "My dearest Misery," he said, "what have you done?" He gasped for breath, fighting with the blood that was filling his throat and spilling out his mouth.

As Hero fell to the floor, dying from his bullet wounds, Misery could hardly make out the identity of the man. She saw the man she loved as well as the man she'd grown to resent. Hero could not save her from Apathy, for they were one in the same. "Why did everything change, Hero? What happened to us? Why did you leave me? Why did you abandon me like you did? Why did you stop loving me?"

Hero responded with his last bit of life, "You of all people should know this. A person can only give so much before they become nothing more than a shell. My love and dedication to making you happy sucked all of the life right out of me. No matter what I did, I could never cure your unhappiness for you were the one allowing yourself to remain unhappy. You needed to let your problems go, but you wouldn't. I never stopped loving you, but I just wasn't strong enough for you anymore. You began to resent me. You thought of me as a monster and rejected me. Without your love, I came to resent you too and became the very beast you thought me to be until one day something between us snapped and we were both so miserable. Now you'll be miserable and alone forever."
