Proud of Myself

Well, I am very proud of myself. Last night I made unagi maki (eel sushi) all by myself.

For a first attempt, it wasn't half bad. Some of it got torn and whatnot because the nori (seaweed) absorbs some of the moisture from the rice. You have to move so fast! The rice was a bitch to make. Preparing it and making my own sushi vinegar to make it sticky was nice and difficult, but I did it all from scratch. The rice glued itself to my fingers...fantastic...until I figured out I needed to keep a big bowl of water handy to keep my hands and utensils wet so the rice wouldn't stick.

I made waaaay too much rice, so I ended up just making plain rice rolls to practice. I kept going until I was out of rice, pushing myself to go faster so the nori didn't get messed up. I think I got better.

Practice makes perfect. I think they're cute. Plus I learned a bunch of new Japanese words for things. I got a huge pack of chopsticks really cheap (they ended up being made of ivory so I felt bad, but they are beautiful), I got a Santoku knife, I got a maki su (sushi rolling mat), and I completed something complicated all by myself from start to finish and completely by hand. I'm so proud of myself. Despite the crap that has been going on I am still managing to find happiness in doing new things. Yay.
